Feeling the post-game slump after a fantastic match or a productive ball machine session? Don’t let that workout energy fizzle out! Here at Active Seniors Pickleball, we know staying sharp on the court requires more than just hitting winners. That’s why we’re excited to introduce you to a high-energy cardio drill specifically designed for active seniors like you!

What is Cardio Exercise?
Cardio, short for cardiovascular exercise, is any activity that gets your heart pumping. This “target heart rate zone” is where your body burns the most fat and calories – perfect for those pickleball rallies!
Walking, cycling, and swimming are classic cardio examples, but even chores like vacuuming can count! The key difference between cardio and strength training is that cardio focuses on using oxygen during exercise.
Cardio Capacity and Active Seniors
Your ability to perform cardio (cardio capacity) is influenced by several factors. Research suggests genetics play a 20-40% role, while females naturally have a lower capacity than males. Additionally, cardio capacity tends to decline with age.
Don’t worry, these aren’t limitations! While some factors influence your starting point, anyone can improve their cardiovascular health!

Why Do You Need A Cardio Drill?
This dynamic routine isn’t just about burning calories, in fact burning calories is the last thing on my mind. I am focusing on my overall health and well being, and how it can elevate my play on the court. I’m talking sharper reflexes, quicker footwork, and enhanced stamina, all packed into a fun and effective drill you can do anywhere.
I do love my ERNE Pickleball Machine, which is an excellent tool for practicing strokes, reaction time, and shot placement. But sometimes, traditional drills might not fully address the cardiovascular demands of an actual pickleball match. This post-ball machine cardio drill bridges that gap, providing a targeted workout that complements your ball machine practice and prepares you for the intensity of a competitive game.
But I don’t only use this exercise after ball machine drills. It is a great workout anytime! Sometimes your group has to quit before you got enough exercise, or you aren’t even playing, just want to get some cardio that helps with your pickleball game. Getting exercise is a big component keeping young as you age.
Why is Cardio Important for Pickleball?
Here are just a few reasons why you should incorporate this post-ball machine cardio drill into your routine:
- Boosts cardiovascular health: The high-energy movements will get your heart pumping, improving your overall fitness and endurance. We all know that exercise plays an important role in a longer more active life. Every little bit counts.
- Sharpens reflexes: Quick transitions and footwork drills in the cardio routine enhance your ability to react quickly on the court. The faster you can move around the court, the better you can chase down balls.
- Enhances agility: The drill incorporates movements that mimic on-court actions, improving your agility and footwork for those key rallies. Footwork is essential for getting in position for the best quality shot on the court.
- Increases stamina: This routine builds your stamina, allowing you to maintain peak performance throughout a long pickleball match. Fatigue can play a major role in pickleball matches. Everything from strategy, to position, to execution, if you are tired, you are not your best.
